As part of our series visiting the best tank museums in the world, a trip to arguably the pinnacle of armour museums was, of course, essential.
And what better excuse than the annual Tankfest action day. Last summer we went along.
The Bovington Tank Museum is famous around the world for its growing collection of over 250 exhibits dotted around the site & its rooms. The exhibition halls have benefitted from extensive investment & lottery funding & it shows. The new spaces are light & airy & there’s a vast cross-section of heavy metal from many nations & eras.
For model makers, a trip to this museum, the birthplace of the tank, is a rite of passage, you could spend a couple of days just soaking up the vehicles & snapping reference shots. But what if you want to take your family along, or better still, see some of the residents of those exhibition halls on the prowl?
The solution is to take in one of the display days on the Bovington calendar. Their flagship event is the annual Tankfest show in June. So the Scale War Machines cameras were rolling in 2012 to take in the 10th anniversary. Here’s our report on the show, so you can see exactly what it’s like.
For the fans of the museum’s star exhibit, Tiger 131, it's a great sight to see the German tank looking in such fine fettle. So check out our film to see the museum, a smattering of AFVs & of course, the Tiger. Enjoy.
