The Long Tom’s story actually begins in World War One when the French Canon de 155mm GPF was adopted by the Americans who badly needed modern firepower. Fastforward to 1938 & they had updated the gun.
The M1 155mm gun, as the new design was known, soon became the M1A1. The major upgrades from the original French gun included a four-wheeled carriage & split trail arms. In addition, a new breech had been fitted – all of which made a very stable & accurate piece with a rate of fire of 40 rounds per hour. The range was over 20km.
It first served in 1942 in the North African campaign. By the end of the war, the M1 Long Tom equipped 40 battalions in both the European & the Pacific theatres. It also served in the armies of Britain & France.
In order to tow this large gun, a prime mover was made by Mack called the NO 7.5 tonne truck. This large 6x6 vehicle had a winch at the front to aid with recovery & could also carry the gun crew & supplies.
It is quite rare to see this rig in Europe, so when we spotted this unique combination on show, it was time to snap some shots just for you - despite the rain!
Take a look!
