NUTS & BOLTS BOOK REVIEW

A good reference book is an essential companion to any model build, helping to correct or improve details.

Nuts & Bolts are a long-established publishing house which releases very detailed soft-cover books for modellers & military vehicle enthusiasts. Their productions are very high-quality & set the benchmark for this sort of reference aid.

The range boasts some extremely knowledgeable authors & researchers who dig up the best information they can find to help you. The titles they release follow a familiar format with the latest books decked out in bright full-colour covers. Inside, they generally begin with 30 or so pages of very well-researched historical text, charts, tables & technical information. Then you get a whole selection of period action photographs showing the weapon or vehicle in question in its wartime environment. The width & breadth of these black & white wartime photos is usually impressive, with every effort made to unearth rarely-seen images.

Finishing off a typical volume is a series of contemporary photos of surviving examples in museums or under restoration with plenty of colour references of the real thing. The restoration photos are especially valuable – often showing components or sub-assemblies in pieces. This really helps the reader to understand how everything fits together.

It’s worth mentioning too that these volumes are richly illustrated with plenty of line drawings, some of which are done in 3D & show numerous angles, as well as specific details. There’s usually extracts from technical manuals as well.
