Manufactured by Vallejo of Spain, item 70.400 in their range is Plastic Putty. This is an acrylic putty that has a variety of model making uses. The most important asset this product has is that it is water-based. The fact there’re no solvents makes this handy little white paste very attractive.
Out of the bottle it is a fairly thick white putty that can be easily handled with a spatula or blade tip. It's not as dense as some modelling putties making this a finer proposition all together. In fact, Plastic Putty is best used for really fine grade filling, finishing & sanding of surface details.
Drying time is not as fast as some solvent putties. It will be hard in a few hours but is best left over night. Also, it can shrink slightly or crack if applied too thickly, unlike its solvent counterparts.
We found the best way to use this putty is for emergency filling – it can be applied after a paint coat and neatened up with water. This is a real plus if you spot an error you want to correct. That’s what happened to us with our BR52 build. The photos show how we filled with Plastic Putty, cleaned up with water & then re-sprayed a thin repair coat. The putty worked like a charm.
A quick test of the product also showed this could be a very promising method for applying Zimmerit coating to your models – again it is quick & easy to use. Any excess or errors can be wiped away with water without any damage or worry – plus this is a non-toxic & odourless product that won’t break the bank, so that’s another bonus.
Our verdict: whilst it won’t do the job of a solvent thinner on the heavier tasks, add it to your toolbox & give it a go when you need a dab of filler here or there. Recommended!
